Child safety and window coverings

Child safety and window coverings

Unfortunately, loose blind cords are a strangulation hazard to children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has determined that custom window coverings with accessible operating cords that are longer than 8 inches pose an unreasonable risk of strangulation to children 8 years old and younger.

According to the CPCS, on average 9 children under 5 years old die every year from strangling in window covering cords. Between January 2009 and December 2021, there were 200 incidents relating to children aged 8 and under regarding window covering cords. Out of these children, a mere 7% escaped unharmed, 38% required medical treatment without hospitalization, 8% were hospitalized and there were 48% fatalities. The injuries sustained in non-fatal cases range from permanent scarring around the neck, traumatic brain injuries and quadriplegia.

We believe any risk to the safety of children or pets is wholly unnecessary. Bloc Blinds are leading the charge when it comes to child and pet safety. From day dot our products have been designed with safety in mind.

Our products operate with a spring system as standard, with many products giving customers the option to choose between wand and motorized operations.

Window cord strangulation is often silent, so parents or caregivers nearby may not realize that a tragedy is happening.
